Over the last few months, we have been working hard on our latest feature. Now the time has finally come: We are expanding your trakked toolbox with the brand new log viewer. You can find out all the details in this blog post.

With the Contao Manager, you already have the option of conveniently viewing the existing log files. However, as soon as you want to monitor several installations for errors, it is inconvenient to log into each individual instance. In practice, the logs are usually only checked in the event of a specific error anyway.

But this is now a thing of the past! trakked now automatically collects the log files of your Contao installations and displays the error messages clearly in one place.

Let's take a look at the new log viewer together. The best way to do this is to watch our video first:

As soon as you click, data is downloaded from YouTube and thus your IP address is submitted to their servers. For more information on data protection regarding our newsletter, please visit our privacy policy.

The log viewer in detail

The number of new log entries is displayed above the menu item so that you can see whether there are new messages when you start trakked.

When you open the log viewer, all new and active messages are displayed first. As usual, you will find various search and filter options on the right-hand side.

To keep the list clear, trakked groups identical error messages and only displays them once. The incidents are counted up so that you still know how often an error has occurred. You can also see the time when the error last occurred. The name of the affected Contao installation and the error message that occurred are also displayed.

If required, you can open the context menu of an installation as usual and quickly access various actions and links.

Click on the error message itself to open the details window on the right-hand side. There you can view all the information in detail.

Archive log entries

So far so good. The log viewer fills up over time. To maintain an overview, it is advisable to check and process the individual messages.

Take the following error message, for example:

According to the description, the mod_quicknav_mobile template is missing. As soon as the error is fixed, you can "archive" the log entry and it will disappear from the list.

Log entries can be archived in various ways:

  • Click on the archive symbol in the detailed view.
  • In the overview, move the mouse over an entry and click on the archive symbol at the end of the line.
  • Select any number of entries and click on the "Archive" action.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut "a".

Ignore log entries

A typical case would be e.g. the following entry:

This error can occur if the database was not accessible. In my case, the error occurs regularly during the backup. As I am aware of the error and cannot do anything about it, I select the "ignore" option. This means that no new active entries will be displayed in future.

You have the same options for ignoring entries as for archiving. The difference is that you simply click on the ignore symbol. Use the "i" as the keyboard shortcut.

Show archived and ignored entries

It is of course possible to view both archived and ignored entries. Simply click on the corresponding filter.

If necessary, you can also restore entries. Simply select the desired entry and click on the symbol for "Do not archive" or "Do not ignore".

All entries that are older than 30 days and do not reappear are automatically deleted by the system.

Our recommendation

Using the log viewer, you will probably discover a large number of errors that you may not have noticed before.

Configuration errors such as:

  • "No layout specified"
  • "Could not find template ..."
  • "Failed to authenticate on SMTP server"

are relatively easy to fix.

Other errors are not so easy to fix. Nevertheless, you should at least take care of problems that occur very frequently.

During our test phase, we noticed that some error messages are difficult to understand, especially for non-developers. We are already working on a solution.

We look forward to your feedback and if you recommend trakked to others.
